“Sepsis can progress rapidly, and the early symptoms may sometimes appear similar to those of a routine infection. The key is identifying abrupt decline in condition. Doctors advise patients and caregivers to watch for the following sudden symptoms during an existing illness or infection:
• Rapid, shallow, or labored breathing
• Unusually fast heart rate
• Confusion, drowsiness, disorientation, or slurred speech
• Very high fever, severe shivering, or an abnormally low body temperature (hypothermia)
• Drastic reduction in urine output, extreme lethargy, or sudden drop in blood pressure
