 JMI organises National Seminar on Seismic Microzonation and Disaster Mitigation

The Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organised a one-day National Seminar on “Seismic Microzonation and Disaster Mitigation” in collaboration with National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), New Delhi on 19th January, 2023 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, JMI.

The invitees included Guest of Honour Shri Taj Hassan (IPS), Executive Director, National Institute of Disaster Management, Chief Guest Prof Iqbal H. Khan, Founder Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, JMI. The speakers of the seminar were Dr. H.S. Mandal, Scientist E, Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi, Dr. Aqil Ahmed, OSD to Commissioner & Senior Town Planner, MCD, New Delhi, Prof. Mohammed Arif, Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. Mehtab Alam, Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT), New Delhi and Mr. Hari Om Gera, Director, Constructure Designs Pvt. Ltd.

The event was flagged off by Professor Gauhar Mahmood, convener of the seminar briefly explaining the concept of microzonation and highlighted the importance of such seminars.

Professor Farhan Ahmad Kidwai, Head of the Department & Chairman of the seminar welcomed the guests and highlighted the significance of Seismic Microzonation in the Indian context.

Professor Mini Shaji Thomas, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, JMI highlighted the importance of such events for the faculty and the students.

Shri Taj Hassan (IPS), Executive Director, NIDM, explained the research and training activities being carried out by NIDM. Prof. Iqbal H Khan, a renowned expert of Geotechnical Engineering spoke about the importance of Seismic Microzonation in Disaster Mitigation.

The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. S. M. Abbas, Department of Civil Engineering, JMI.

The technical session I on “Seismic Microzonation: Experiences & Initiatives at National Level” was chaired by Prof. Farhan Ahmad Kidwai, Head of the Department and co- chaired by Prof. Akil Ahmad. Dr. H.S. Mandal, Scientist E, Ministry of Earth Sciences presented an elaborate case study on the microzonation of Delhi. Dr. Aqil Ahmed, OSD to Commissioner & Senior Town Planner, MCD, New Delhi presented his paper on the initiatives taken by M.C.D. on dangerous buildings.

The technical session II was chaired by Professor Nazrul Islam and co-chaired by Prof. Quamrul Hassan. Prof. Mohammed Arif from Aligarh Muslim University, presented a paper on “Seismic Strengthening of RC Buildings”, Prof. Mehtab Alam, Professor Emeritus, Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT), New Delhi presented a paper on “Seismic Risk and its Mitigation using Innovative Reinforcing Materials” and Mr. Hari Om Gera, Director, Constructure Designs Pvt. Ltd., presented a paper “Energy Dissipation by Friction Damper” during the session.

In the Concluding Session, the chairman of the session Professor Shamshad Ahmad summarized the deliberations of the various sessions and read out the recommendations of the seminar. It was a very fruitful and useful seminar for the faculty and students.
