Why Thousands of Gig Workers Skipped New Year 2026 Celebrations?
Gig workers are not celebrating because many of their basic rights and protections remain unaddressed, despite being essential contributors to services like food delivery, ride-hailing, and quick commerce. Even during festive periods like New Year’s Eve, instead of enjoying the celebrations, thousands of workers are protesting for:
Fair Pay – Many workers face declining earnings due to platform commissions, rising fuel and maintenance costs, and arbitrary deductions. They want a guaranteed minimum monthly income.
Job Security & Legal Recognition – They are often treated as “independent contractors,” which excludes them from labour protections like minimum wage, paid leave, or maternity benefits.
Safety Concerns – Delivery workers, especially women, face risks on the road, pressure to meet tight timelines, and sometimes harassment.
Social Security – Lack of health insurance, emergency leave, and retirement benefits leaves them vulnerable during crises.
Essentially, while most people enjoy holidays, gig workers are fighting for basic dignity and security in their jobs. Their “App Bandh” is a sign that the sector’s growth has not translated into fair treatment for the workers powering it.
